Q: Why are we required to be a member of FATS?
A: Members are given a variety of advantages by being involved with the organization. The Future Athletic Trainers' Society participates in a variety of social events, fundraisers, and local community events. During a lot of these events students have the ability to network and begin building a solid foundation of relationships with those involved in the profession of Athletic Training and the community. A lot of these events can help build the students resume, cover letter, and references. A common phrase: "what you get from this organization is what you put into it," applies very well to this organization and is why we highly encourage students to participate.
Q: How much are my FATS dues?
A: $35 for both First year students and Second year students.
Q: What do my FATS dues go to?
A: FATS dues are used for a variety of things; they are used for being able to offset the cost of the banquet that is put on at the end of the year for the graduating Senior class and conferences that students may attend (FWATA). A portion of the FATS dues also go towards the organizations polos.
Q: What is FWATA?
A: FWATA stands for the Far West Athletic Trainers Association (District 8), and is a conference that will be held July 14-18, 2020 in Kailua, Hawaii. This conference offers student sessions where our students are able to learn or be introduced to new content within the profession and it also allows them to the opportunity to network with those in the profession from all over District 8. Q: What is the purpose of "FATS points?"
A: Members will receive FATS points throughout the year when they participate in events and attend meetings. The amount of points given is determined by the officers. Towards the end of the year, the amount of points will be totaled and curved based on the amount of opportunities to receive points if offered. Qualifying members will be invited this year to an end of the year pizza party, and the senior members will receive their stoles and a gift provided by FATS.
Q: How can I become more involved in FATS?
A: Each year, the Site Representatives Committee select a represent from each clinical site. Additionally, a Fundraising Committee and an Outreach Committee is established. These three committees are run under the supervision of a FATS officer respectively, but are not limited to only the working with the appointed officer.
Q: What are Site Representatives Committee?
A: Site Representatives are typically one first year student in the ATEP (but can also be a second year student) among each of the 10 different clinical sites within the program that function as a liaison between their clinical site and the student organization. They are expected to communicate with preceptors on upcoming events and reminders, as well as provide media content from their clinical sites, among other duties. The site representatives are primarily coordinated by the Historian, Bianca Mattioli.
Q: What is the Fundraising Committee?
A: The Fundraising committee is on a volunteer basis and is run primarily by the Vice-President, Tal Shoshan. These members will help coordinate fundraising events for the organization throughout the year. They will also help the executive board organize the annual Golf Tournament that is held during spring semester.
Q: What is the Outreach Committee?
A: The Outreach Committee is on a volunteer basis and is run primarily by the Director of Communications, Alaina Nicholas. This committee functions as a way to help promote the profession of athletic training, relating but not limited to, National Athletic Training Month in March. They will also help the executive board organize the annual Golf Tournament that is held during spring semester.
Q: How can I become a FATS officer?
A: First year students who are interested in becoming a FATS officer for the next school year must be in good academic standing with the ATEP and have a minimum of 10 fats points. These members will prepare a speech that is presented to the organization and current FATS officers. The organization will than take a vote to elect the incoming FATS officers. Elections take place during spring semester.
Q: Are scholarships offered through this program?
A: FATS does not have its own scholarship to offer, however, as a member of NATA students have the ability to apply to a variety of scholarships geared towards their degree.
